Setting Up Your Milesight UG56 LoRaWAN Gateway: A Step-by-Step Guide

Welcome to the world of IoT and ConnectedFresh! A functioning and internet-connected Gateway is necessary for the activation of your sensors. Please make sure to set up this Gateway prior to proceeding with sensors. 


This article will guide you through the process of setting up your Milesight UG56 LoRaWAN. With just a few simple steps, you'll be up and running in no time.

Unpacking Your Box

Your sensor box will come with the following components:

  1. 1x Gateway: either UG56-Ethernet or UG56 Cellular
  2. 1x Magnetic Antenna
  3. 1x  Wall Mounting Bracket
  4. 4x Wall Mounting Kits
  5. 2x M3 Bracket Fixing Screws
  6. 1x Ethernet cable
  7. 1x Power cable
  8. 1x Cellular antenna (only in UG56-CELL model)
Note: If your Gateway is connecting to cellular, the SIM card is preinstalled.

Setting up the Gateway

Step 1: Identify Placement

It is important to place the gateway in an area that will allow it to properly communicate with sensors: 
  • Location: gateway should be placed in a central location that is easily accessible for maintenance and allows for maximum coverage within the establishment

  • Network coverage: Ensure that the gateway is connected to the internet with a stable and fast connection

  • Mounting: gateway should be securely mounted in a location that is protected from physical damage and high temperatures

  • Power source: Provide a reliable and constant power source for the gateway such as a wall outlet or UPS

Step 2: Attach Antenna(s)

The antenna is attached by into the magnetic bases, which then connect to the gateway. Attach the LoRa antenna where it states "LoRa" on the device and the Cellular antenna where it states "cellular".


Placement of antennas: 
  • Height: The antenna should be placed at a height that provides maximum coverage, you should aim to place the antenna as high as possible while still ensuring it has a clear line of sight to the sensors and devices.

  • Orientation: Orient the antenna vertically to achieve maximum coverage. Horizontal orientation may result in decreased coverage and reduced signal strength.

  • Clear line of sight: The antenna should have a clear line of sight to the sensors and devices within the establishment. Avoid placing the antenna near objects that may obstruct the signal, such as metal structures, walls, or other electronic devices.


Step 3: Connect Ethernet

To allow your device to connect to the internet, plug your ethernet cord into the gateway.

It is important that the internet connection is reliable and does not have any restrictions preventing the gateway from accessing the internet. Depending on your organization, you may need to work with your IT department. Please reach out to support@connectedfresh.com for assistance if needed.

Step 4: Connect Power

To power the device, plug the gateway into power via the USB Type C (white wire) Port connection. The gateway LEDs will light up and may take up to 5 minutes to secure a connection.

Step 5: Validate Connection
